Twenty-five years! That's a long time. Submitting entries into the sweepstakes, this year marks the twenty-sixth year of complying with the contest's rules. Typically, the sweepstakes/contest last about two months. Entering HGTV's Dream Home Sweepstakes, for me, has become an annual event. This year, the 2023 HGTV Dream Home Giveaway will end on the 16th of February 2023.
In case you didn't know, the HGTV 2023 dream home is located in Colorado. In 1997, HGTV gave away their first dream home which was located in Wyoming. That's when my dream home sweepstakes started and kicked in.
Interesting facts, while Florida has seven dream home locations, as of this writing, California has the most dream home locations with ten. If you want to see all the dream homes up until 2022, you can click here.
Year after year, impressive dream homes in fabulous locations are advertised and shown on HGTV. Besides the dream home, there are the Urban home and the Smart home HGTV giveaways. Yep! Entered those too.
Once you sign up for the reminders for the dream home, you will receive an email each day for the duration of the contest. It's one of my favorite features for the HGTV giveaway.
Must admit the 2005 dream home in Tyler, Texas was spectacular and special, and it's one of my favorite dream properties. Most winners don't take up residence in the HGTV home that they win. It's a rare exception that the winner stays at the home. The Tyler, Texas winner lived in the dream house for two years. While the winner planned to use the dream home commercially, he wasn't able to obtain legal authorization from the city or county. Eventually, the winner sold the home. The majority of the winners sell their dream home prizes.
Taxes! There are federal, and state. and local taxes. With the prize worth millions of dollars, the taxes can be overwhelming. It's the main reason why winners sell their HGTV dream home. Only a few winners have lived in the sweepstakes dream home longer than a year. According to a blog online, after trying to make Vermont's dream home into their personal ski retreat, the winners sold the property for a million less than the 3.8 million that it was claimed to be worth.
Over the years, HGTV has added a second chance to each day's entry. In the beginning, that would be 1997. The sweepstakes required you to fill in each blank space. Now, in the first entry, you fill in each space. After that, you enter your email address. That's it! The online entry process is too easy.
Another addition, HGTV added a cash option that wasn't an option in 1997. In 1997, you could mail in entries, which is no longer an option. All entries are submitted online.
If people sell the sweepstakes prize, why enter in the first place? The weekend! The winner's weekend is fantastic and fabulous. The winner is treated like a VIP meeting celebrities and sponsors and enjoying special events. At least, that's what previous winners gush about.
For me, it's a fun contest. You don't have to mail in entries. Facing life challenges, it's a great dream and diversion.
Besides the lovely and impressive furniture and decor, every year there are new and unique decorating ideas. It's not just the dream home. The sweepstake prize consists of the dream home, the furnishing, a new car, and cash.
Who can enter? Individuals who are Discovery Inc. employees or product sponsors employees and their families are ineligible to enter. All others are eligible to enter. It's best to review HGTV rules regarding eligibility. As for the rules, you can find them here.
Everyone loves pictures! Click here to watch a video of the 2023 dream home.
My entry went through today, like a million others. In 1998, by my estimate, sixty entries were among the 2.5 million entries. By 2016, the number of entries increased to 127 million. Who knows how many entries HGTV will receive for their 2023 Colorado Dream Home? You have to play to win. It only takes one entry.
Will you be the lucky sweepstake winners?

Oh my gosh, yes, those homes are always so incredible!!! Iβd never heard about the winnerβs weekend part though!! Good luck to you π₯°π₯°
Wow! I never really paid any attention. I will now. Sure hope your ship of luck sails in. I am rooting for you. Riveting story of life chances.
OH, I love this! And love contests! I hope I'm eligible after I read the rules. I lived in Colorado from 2002-2013. I still miss it till this day and this would give me a reason to move back there. Thanks for sharing Babs! And good luck!
Love getting to know you through stories like this! Hoping you win your dream house some day!
I knew I liked you! Lol! I do these every year. I noticed a couple years ago that they have added sister sites with contests for upwards of 10k, and I usually enter those while I'm at it. My husband makes fun of the odds, but someone has to win. Why can't it be one of us? Great piece! π
This sounds like so much fun!
I always see sweepstake adds for things in Instagram when it comes to cars. Like one company says, buy "x" $ amount of product for "x" amount of entries. Sure, I'm fine with not winning, but kost if the time a lot of those things feel like scams to me. Like the McDonald's Monopoly stickers used to be pulled off the factory production lines. So, the winners of the inner circles really knew somebody on the inside or something like that. If it's free to enter, then I'm fine with having nothing to lose and everything to gain, but if I have to give something up, I think I'd rather just take a trip to a casino and try one of their machines.
Wowww, this Dream Home is fabulous! I enjoyed reading this!
Great write-up, I always love the Dream Home!
I love it Babs... You always write the most interesting stuff. What I like best is that you always give the reader a cozy feel and you are unpretentious in your style. When I read your works I get the feeling that you are not writing to win a contest but your are writing for the sheer pleasure of writing. Your writing is relatable.
Good article. Good luck.
I have entered several times over the years myself.
Very informative. I like how you included the links without distracting from your text. (Personally, uprooting myself from the community might make me think twice about a dream home somewhere else..also still love my 4 seasons!)
Hope you win. π₯° Great info ! The taxes kill everything donβt they? Hrrrr
Great write up Babs. Is it free to enter? We have something similar over here but itβs a raffle and you buy tickets.
Sounds like an exciting contest!! Excellent write up about it.
