Drabble Drop : Justify

I hunker down as a new blast echoes from behind the hills, followed by the rat-a-tat of multiple machine guns. I wince at my fearful reflex to the noise, aware that I am showing my fear to a subordinate.

“Corporal, I’m concerned at the rumours I’m hearing lately. Do you have something to say?” I asked.

Corporal Lance gives me a cheeky smile, “Just doing my bit for the war, Sir.”

“Just because we’re at war doesn’t justify treating innocent people as criminals. You cannot use these innocents as target practice, Corporal! I’ll be putting you on report.”

I was challenged to write a drabble of the word ‘justify'.

Wikipedia defines a drabble as follows :

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
