When Someone Doesn’t Like You Back

I’ve always wanted to find a best friend who likes the same things I do, someone who “gets” me. There was this boy, Alex, who I liked for a while.

When you like someone a lot, you might act a little silly.

Every day, I’d think of fun things to talk to Alex about, even though I wasn’t sure if he even cared. I’d try to impress him with small gifts and always be there to help him with anything. But Alex didn’t seem to like me in that way.

I wasn’t just someone who wanted to hold his hand. I could be his good friend, someone who listened and gave him good ideas. But he didn’t want to be friends like that either.

I really liked Alex, so I kept trying to make him like me back. I’d listen to everything he said and try to talk about things he liked. Even if he just said “Oh,” I’d tell all my friends how great he was.

One day, I was having dinner with my friend Sarah. She asked me a good question: “Why do you keep chasing after someone who doesn’t like you back?” It made me stop and think.

It wasn’t fair that I liked Alex so much when he didn’t like me back. It made me feel sad and tired. It was like I was giving him all my energy, but he wasn’t giving me any back.

I realized that kind of love wasn’t good for me.

Now, I want to find someone who likes me for who I am, someone I can be friends with and have fun with, even if we don’t talk all the time.

I won’t jump into liking someone without thinking anymore. I liked Alex because he was brave and funny, but now I want someone who likes me the way I like them.
