I am a God.

You might be wondering, If you're a God, why're you in a cage?

Fair question.

I like it here. There are benefits. Meals are timely. There's no Dogs.

Still, I tire of it. I want to roam, stretch my claws. So, today, I shall Bless someone, and the Chosen One will take me to their home, where they can worship me properly.

I let several pass without extending them any notice. Poor wretches. They'll lead godless lives, bereft of me.

One comes I like the look of. I'll not let him walk by; I'll Hook him. I saunter forth, where he can see me better. Enough to have him enthralled to me. To be certain, I bless him with a Slow Blink.

He stops, looks at me. Fool! Medusa-like, I've trapped him.

Now he's seen my glory, he won't be parted from me for long. Anything more I bestow on him now is my whimsy. The "brrrp". The wave through these bars to pat his ungainly fleshy paw with my immaculate one.

That's right, you're mine, I tell him, hooking one claw gently so he feels it against his skin. His gaze wanders down the row to other, lesser creatures. I tighten my grip and harden my gaze. No! You. Are. Mine.

Obedient, he looks back to me and rubs my chin. I forgive him.

I stand proudly to summon the staff, waving my tail. They scurry to do my bidding.

I'll have a scratch post and a Tree, I tell him. He murmurs what must be assent. I'll go where I like, indoors or out, and sleep wherever I please. He doesn't contradict me, I've Chosen well. I tell him what food I like, so he'll be well-stocked prior to my blessed arrival.

Graciously, I let him leave, keeping my gaze on him so he knows he's still Mine, body and soul, wherever his big clumsy feet might take him.

After a snack, there is little to do but wait, until these mortal servants rearrange the world around me 'til I'm in my chosen place.

I nap.

The story behind the story: As we all know, you don't "adopt" a cat. A cat adopts you.

'In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.'

— Terry Pratchett

I love this!! My orange cat did something similar to me many years ago, I do love that saying "they adopt us". This was so great LC!!

The cat always believes itself to be a god.

  • Well-wrought! I do not have pets, because I am animal enough. Hehe... but I like kitties, and my yard is a haven for all sorts of creatures whose antics never cease to amuse.

I have a weird cat. She is all neurosis and self doubt. It's not a happy cat.

Purrrfect description of cats. Sometimes, in the wee small hours, I hate my cat.

This is awesome and so true! Cats are hilarious! When I left for work, my cat would nip over the wall and go to my retired next door neighbor’s house where he was hand fed chicken and stretched out in front of their fire. I had a cat flap. He could have stayed at home but no. I’m just surprised he bothered to come home at all! Great story L.C.

Reminds me that in a supposed study cats see us an bigger, more clumsy, stupider cats. Meanwhile dogs know that we're different animals and still like us as we are. Makes me wonder the fight that cat must have with other godlike beings, especially the smaller, cuter, ones that have an easier time claiming the hearts of multiple humans at once.

  • Lol typical cat! This is great! ☮️
