The Plastics (Renee Rapp as Regina George,Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners, Avantika as Karen Shetty) in Mean Girls (2024)

I used to think Mean Girls 2 was terrible but when I watched Mean Girls musical film adaptation based on the Tony-nominated Broadway musical adaptation I just wanted to say why.... I mean don’t get me wrong I love Tina Fey but what the f did I just watch? The film beats Mean Girls 2 as the worst movie musical adaptation. Here’s why...

The opening is set at a garage where Janis and Damian played by Disney Moana star Aul'i Cravalho and Broadway's A Strange Loop Jaquel Spivey recording a video singing the opening to the garage door opening "A Cautionary Tale" to somewhere in a safari in Kenya, Africa. We see Cady Heron (played by Angourie Rice) and Cady's Mother (played by Jenna Fischer) no father. ????? Like what??? It didn't make any sense. I was so upset. I mean no parents just a parent. Not even Ana Gasteyer and Neil Flynn playing as Cady's parents. Honestly, Tina Fey could've added the father to the film. So, Cady's Mom tells her that they are leaving Africa and she is going to North Shore High School. Cut to the homeroom class where we see Principal Duvall and Ms. Norbury played by Tim Meadows and Tina Fey wearing the same clothes from the 2004 film previously played in the 2004 film. The cafeteria looks nothing like the old cafeteria from 2004 everything looks like a middle school cafeteria. Damien and Janis met Cady in the bathroom and helped her around the school. In the "Meet the Plastics" scene, there wasn’t much singing just Damien and Janis introducing everyone like the Jocks, sexually active Band Geeks, Wannbes, etc., and the Plastics: Gretchen and Karen. Regina George (played by Renee Rapp) dressed in leather black attire like she was in a bike gang or a rock and roll Regina George with a tray of cheese fries enters the cafeteria singing the "My Name is Regina George" part.

Regina (Rapp) dressed in black leather attire singing "Meet the Plastics"

The weirdest part of that scene was the way Cady stared at Regina like an obsessive stalker.

Cady (Angourie Rice) staring at Regina like an obsessive freak.

The song stops until Regina sees Cady lured her to the Plastics's table. Regina and the Plastics talks to Cady with the same old dialogue from the 2004 film until Jason asks Cady a nasty question but this question is weird and the dude looks a little older and doesn't even look like a high schooler.

The Plastics meets Cady.

In the "Apex Predator" scene, the Broadway setting was at the mall sung by Cady and Janis same as in the 2004 film. However, the "Apex Predator" setting takes place at the school not at the mall where there'll be animalistic choreography and reference to the 2004 film. Her car looks nice and the house looks not so nice. Busy Phillips plays Regina's mother and her outfit looks like a Walmart cheap pink outfit acting like the cool mom.

The Plastics including Cady dressed in pink outside of North Shore.

The "Sexy" scene was my favorite. I loved how it was when Karen started recording herself singing Sexy to transition to different costumes and a TikTok collage filled with girls dancing to the song. The party looks similar to the 2004 house.

Cady dressed in a creepy scary bride enters freaking everybody out at the party. Gretchen approached Cady until Regina texted Gretchen wondering why Cady attending the Halloween party until she told him Aaron invited her and she liked him.

Regina (Rapp) dressed as an angel texting Gretchen.

The dance break was amazing and fun to watch and I thought it was pretty funny. Then, the scene where Regina confronts her ex Aaron about Cady until she sings "Someone Gets Hurt". Her voice was electrifying, everything was frozen and controlled by Regina, and the music was like R&B and rock and roll. The two kissed and everything unfreezes and distraught Cady watched them.

Regina sings "Someone Gets Hurt" and everyone at the party is frozen except Regina and Aaron.
Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney) caught his girlfriend Regina cheating on him after Cady told him.

Heartbroken Cady leaves the party, she goes to Janis and Damian to tell them that she saw Regina take Aaron back. Damian tells Cady why Janis and Regina are no longer friends and makes a vengeful plan to get back at Regina. At the Revenge Party scene, Janis and Damien help Cady out to get Aaron back. The school hallway was colorful filled with clouds, colorful lockers, a blue sky-painted walls, everyone dressed making it look fun and inviting while plotting a plan for Cady to get back at Regina. I like the part when Gretchen cracked and spilled the beans on Regina ever since she saw Cady get a candy gram from Regina even though it wasn't from her.

Regina and Shane Omen hooking up in the custodian closet.

After she was caught, she shut the door on him she didn't act stunned except for Aaron. The Winter Talent show looked exactly like the 2004 extravagant, the Plastics Santa Helpers costumes's were different and glittery, and Regina was being a b-tch towards her friends. The performance was on point until Regina fell making a fool of herself in front of the Plastics and everyone watching the performance. Everyone would talk about her social media trashing Regina since the talent show trainwreck performance and praising Cady making Cady "the hero".

I would say more scenes but it wasn't that much interesting plus it didn't include much of the songs from the musical. The musical modern film disappointed me and it reminded me of the Heathers musical episode on Riverdale. Some of the Broadway songs were cut, some of the settings from the film could've been better and all of the entire costumes were just bland not iconic like the 2004 film. I mean the Color Purple did it better, shady but I don't care. However, I would like to give some good pointers on this musical film adaptation. Rapp's performance as Regina George was decent I thought she had an incredible singing voice however I don’t like her costumes seriously it wasn't giving Regina George. Her clothes look like she got them from Walmart not even like rich, pink, and sexy Regina George from 2004. I loved Auli'i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey's performances as Janis and Damian. The rest of the cast was meh. Christopher played Aaron Samuels looks doesn't seem charming he looked like he could play JD in a Heathers musical or he could play Jason in the film. As for Bebe Wood as Gretchen and Karen, the director should've switched their roles. Bebe could have played as Karen and Avantika could have played as Gretchen. I meant she looked too smart to play the "dumb" Karen. It was so good to see some of the original 2004 cast of Mean Girls in the film. The craziest part I keep forgetting about Kevin Gnaoopr in the film I guess I am so used to the 2004 film Kevin.
