To Frog or Not to Frog

A crocheting term

To frog or not to frog is a question that many knitters/crocheters have asked themselves when doing a project. Frogging is up to the individual. You may be asking what is frogging? Frogging is when you make a mistake and you have to rip it apart. If the mistake doesn’t bother you then you can leave it and move on. But if it does bother you then you will have to frog it.

No one knows where the term “ frogging “ comes from.

While researching this term, I learned that is called frogging because it sounds like ribbit ribbit when you say rip rip it out.

You won’t find the word frogging in any knitting/crochet pattern but it is a common word in the world of crocheters.

I have been crocheting for a long time but just recently learned this term. I didn't realize there was a word for taking apart a mistake in a crochet project. I love the word frogging but hate to do it. Sometimes, if the mistake isn't noticeable, I leave it and move on. But if the mistake is noticeable I will take it apart.

One time I was learning how to crochet a hat for my granddaughter and it was way too big for her and me, so I had to frog the whole project. I was not happy.

Oh, no! The whole thing you had to take apart!! Loved your story.

  • Lisa, I appreciate you sharing the phrase "frogging" and your crocheting experience! It's intriguing how distinct vocabularies and traditions are shared by tiny societies.

I knew nothing about crocheting. Today I learned about frogging. You know I am going to use this term in my everyday conversations. Thanks for the lesson and may your future crocheting adventures have very little frogging!

  • Interesting story. I never learnt to crochet properly... I'm a left hander and my quick tempered Mum didn't have the patience to teach me. My Nana used to regularly undo much/most of her projects, often when she'd get to a part in the pattern that nobody could work out! Her finished work was always good though.

I love the term but also hate to do it, I think I hate it more when I realize that I should have done it 20+ rows later though 😬. Congrats on the Top Story!
