The Coffee's on Me
A Poem on Small Acts of Kindness
Isn't kindness and generosity a rather didactic, altruistic idea meant for children's picture books? It's not unusual to equate acts of kindness with dramatic acts of heroism, perhaps saving someone from a fire or making an extra large donation to a charity.
We shouldn't discount any act of kindness, however trivial it may seem. While paying for a cup of coffee isn't an act you would put on the front pages of the Herald Tribune, it does make a huge difference to someone who is exhausted and needs that gesture at the point of time you extend it.Saying "thank you' to the store clerk who helped haul your groceries into the boot of your car may not seem significant, but it does make him feel better for having his effort appreciated.
So, the next time you pay for a cup of coffee, extend that small act of kindness to yourself and give yourself a pat on the back. Someone does feel much better for drinking it. Enjoy these rhyming couplets.
Just a few dollars, its no big deal
Not thought of, for none to see
But it completes tired pablo's meal
His eyes brighten, "the coffee's on me."
A trip to the kitchen, no harm there
Not pondered, no mystery
It's common for all to share
But a colleague's form thrives with "the coffee's on me."
A flick of the expresso machine
No second glance, it's a breeze
But mum's dull eyes regain their sheen
When you tell her "the coffee's on me."
That cup of coffee, though not a lot
Those who drink, will love the thought.

Just thanking someone is a good thing, but if we have the option to show kindness we should. Excellent poem
