Greece is a favorite destination for millions of tourists.

Despite the fact that the biggest percentage of them prefer to visit the islands, mainland Greece has many attractive options to offer to holidaymakers.

One of these options is to visit the evergreen mountain of Pelion in Thessaly, Central Greece.

According to Greek mythology, the mountain itself was named after King Peleus.

It was believed to be the homeland of the mythic Centaurs who were half human and half horse creatures.

It is no coincidence that Mt. Pelion served as a holiday resort for the Olympian gods. The fact that Zeus and the rest of his company had chosen Pelion to spend their holiday there is some form of top recommendation for those wishing to visit it; better than any holiday review!

For any traveler who wants to visit a destination, there are a number of things that he or she should know about the actual place before his or her arrival.

For example, a traveler would like to know the most popular and attractions that are worth visiting, and what the place is generally famous for.

A good source of information can be and other people who have been there before and can express their genuine opinion.

Locals also usually give invaluable pieces of information, since they know the ins and outs of the place, where not to go and sites to avoid, how to save money while enjoying the place, at the same time, etc.

First of all, we need to find out some reasons why Mt. Pelion is so popular with locals.

The countless fish taverns, located at the seafront of the capital city of Volos, at the roots of Mt. Pelion, offer a gastronomic variety and experience at very reasonable prices, which you will remember for a long time.

Octopus on the grill and the marvelous “kakavia” fish soup (a variation of the French bouillabaisse) while you enjoy drinking the world famous ouzo, which the region is famous for, will take you back to the time of mythology, in the company of wine god Dionysus.

When you visit Pelion, it is essential to pay a visit to the “ouzo temples” of Volos, where you can “worship” the mythological drinking god.

Another thing that you should know is that Mt. Pelion is equally marvelous and magical all-year round, whatever season you may choose to visit it.

Perhaps, when visiting Greece on holiday, you don’t naturally expect to go snow skiing, so you will be amazed to know that there is a skiing center on the mountain, where you can practice your skiing skills during the winter months.

The experience is outstanding, since you can ski while having a breathtaking view of the Pagasetic Gulf at your feet, at the same time.

Without doubt, you would feel like mythical King Peleus used to feel on his throne!

When it comes to the most well-kept secret of Pelion, it is none other than its small, picturesque villages.

The hospitality of local people, combined with the natural beauty of unspoilt forests and fruit tree orchards was the reason behind many visitors’ decision to buy holiday homes in the area.

However, the area is not densely populated and built yet, and there are many opportunities for those wishing to make a life dream come true by buying a holiday home there.

On the other hand, those no-so-lucky ones who cannot afford to buy and own a piece of paradise themselves, there are many small family pensions available to rent, where a guest will literally feel at home.
