Koh Samui is a slice of paradise that's more than just sun-kissed beaches and swanky resorts. From lip-smacking Thai curries to pulsating nightclubs, Samui promises a potpourri of experiences for the eager traveller. So, whether you're a foodie, an adventurer, or a party animal, here's how to make the most of this tropical jewel.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to head over to Koh Samui for decent weather is between December and August – this is when it's mostly sunny and warm, with temperatures hovering over 30 degrees Celsius. But from September to November, expect a lot of rain, and it can get pretty hot.

Accommodation

Koh Samui is a popular destination in Thailand, so naturally, the island is home to a wide variety of accommodation options. From budget guesthouses to places like Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, there’s plenty to choose from. For instance, in Chaweng, beach resorts are all the rage for the stunning views and the accessibility they provide. Be sure to do plenty of research before settling on a place; there are plenty of options, so take your time and find a place that meets your needs.

Getting to Koh Samui

There are a few ways to do it, and it mostly comes down to how much you want to spend. Plus, where you're coming from and how long you're okay travelling for also play a part. There are a bunch of choices like buses, trains, ferries, and flights.

Remember, since Koh Samui is an island, you'll definitely need a ferry or plane to get you here.

Getting Around Koh Samui

Most people use cars to get around Koh Samui. It's a top choice if you want to fully experience the entire island without feeling rushed. Car hire is about 1000 THB for the day. If you need to fill up, it'll cost you about 400 THB for a full tank.

For the Food Lovers

People often talk about how Thai food tastes the same everywhere, whether it's in a swanky eatery or a roadside shack. To some extent, they're not wrong! But there’s a significant difference between dining at a street food market and dining at a fancy restaurant.

Check out some of the roadside stalls for a simple meal that’s light on the pocket yet high on taste. For a high-end experience, book a table at one of the restaurants that offer delicious food as well as stunning views.

If seafood tickles your fancy, don't skip the Fisherman's Village in Bophut. It might have a touristy vibe, but sometimes tourists know best.

For the Culture Vultures

For art aficionados, Samui may initially appear to lean towards the commercial, with a smattering of typical galleries. But scratch the surface a little and you'll find original artists’ studios around Chaweng. You should definitely swing by Cameron Hansen's gallery – a haven of authentic Asian photography.

For a slice of local life, head to the top of Wat Phra Yai or drop by Wat Plai Laem. Despite the throngs of tourists, these temples still manage to emanate tranquillity, offering a cultural contrast to the island's party pulse.

For the Sun and Sand Seekers

Beach bums, you're spoilt for choice. Of course, there's Chaweng, with its powdery white sands, but sometimes the best beaches are the lesser-known ones. Grab a scooter, whizz around, and discover your personal sandy sanctuary.

For the Adrenaline Junkies

The thrill-seekers aren’t left out either. Rent a scooter and feel the wind in your hair. If you're up for a challenge, make your way to the waterfalls near Lamai. Just remember, it's not for the faint-hearted. For those who'd rather explore the blue depths, there's snorkelling at Coral Cove and diving at Ang Thong National Marine Park.

For the Night Owls

Koh Samui's nightlife is something of a legend. Chaweng is party central with its mix of clubs, pubs, and everything in between. If sand-between-your-toes is your party vibe, Ark Bar on the beach is where you want to be, dancing away under the moonlight.
