Writing about writing

So meta.

Finding my voice,

Playing with flow

And theme and plot and dialogue —

Oh, Poetry is so much easier!

Character development,

The joys —

Writing characters to

Say things

They might not say

In this world.

So I change the whole world,

Trying to make him comfortable,

And then he rolls himself

Into a blanket burrito

And refuses to come back out,

Alive on the page.

Throwing up my hands,

Giving up,

For now —

I vacuum the house,

And do the dishes,

And tend my mending,

All the while watching him,

In my imagination,

Where he lives.

And as I don my favorite

Fleece onesie,

And put up the hood,

To put myself into his headspace,

He tells me —

He can’t say what I want him to,

And stay identifiably true to himself.

And if I’d been listening,

Instead of powering over,

I would have heard him

Tell me that,

Before I went and changed the world for him.
