Those Eyes That Don't Smile

But lips that do.

I see you

Smiling away

Trying to make everyone around the table happy

Constantly cracking jokes

Being sarcastic

Trying very hard to be witty

But I also know

That deep down inside

There's a little boy

Who carries a lot of sadness in his heart

Who carries a lot of love for others

Who is stressed out

Due to changing times

Added responsibilities

Uncertain situations

And yet

Never shows it to the world

Because he knows how hard it is

To be stuck in negative situations

With no feeling of hope

So he doesn't want to show

Sadness

Just in case

Someone is reminded of their own sadness

When they see him

So he continues to smile

Swallow his sorrow

And carry on

Forward.

You expressed this well. Gives pause for reflective thought...why DO we do that? Push our pain down and mask it completely like it's so unwelcome? And when in our lives did we learn to do that so well? Just thoughts...

Which may lead to therapy sessions. I sure hope he finds a genuine friend or two to share the load. Lovely poem. It has been a while since I read a poem from you.

    A moving tribute.

  • But being a people pleaser and trying to make everyone happy is a slpw suicide. He needs to take care of himself first. Loved your poem!
