Freedom

I dream of the word Free.

To be free is

having control of every limb,

muscle,

bone—

every Fiber of my being

My life feels like a game of Wheel of Fortune,

when I spin the wheel,

I always "miss a turn"

—life's funny way of giving me hope,

then taking it from me.

I want to glide like a bird

my limbs becoming light as feathers

while the sun wraps its golden arms around me

listening to the symphony created by the ocean breeze

the taste of salt around my lips

knowing that for once

it wasn't because of the tears on my face

but the seasoned waters of the sea

I want to run

I want to leave behind an imprint

My bare feet hit the dirt like wheels

creating unique patterns of furrows and ridges

An embrace once shared

between the dark rubber and gravel

—a reminder of my journey

a distance traveled

to visualize the finish line

salivating at the thought of victory

a destination once out of reach

When I use the word free,

I mean no longer occupying space in the passenger seat.

Taking control of the reigns,

finally given the key.

To put the windows down,

have my hair blowing in the wind.

To feel nothing but joy.

To drop off my condition,

leaving it stranded on the street.

To blast the songs I love,

setting my destination —Home Bound

to a place where I always felt like me.
