Fiction doesn't pay, they say

So get your head out of the clouds.

Start thinking about real things

Like bills and rent and frowns.

Stop trying to be something

You know you'll only end up hurt.

Fiction isn't useful,

You'll end up in the dirt.

Fiction doesn't pay, they say

So give up on your dreams.

There are better things to do and think

And better things to be.

There isn't any point you know,

In writing what you love.

Fiction doesn't pay, they say

And I scream I fucking know

But fiction makes the world go round,

And nourishes the soul.

Fiction doesn't pay, they say

So go try something else.

But fiction makes me happy

And damn it, I write well.
