Eloise

A Story

Golden brown hair

Crowned with gold

Daughter of a human king

Until she was sixteen years old

And taken from the world of mortals

The story is she wanted a ball

No one read the signs or omens

On that night, she donned transparent wings and all

And danced to music all night long

Everyone said it was one of the best flings undergone

And the last of the season

Even though the season was only half-gone

The night was long, full of perfume

As everyone danced on

When suddenly, Eloise’s costume

Started to sparkle and come to life

Rising in the air, her wings creating a faint breeze

She disappeared from view, never to be seen again

The king sent out search parties full of expertise

And an envoy to the Fae, with no news, returned

His only Princess was forever gone

From this earth, as far as he could see

He left nothing unsearched, whereon

In his quest to find his child, his Eloise

Some say that to this day,

He still roams the hills,

Searching for the missing princess, do pray

Offering many traveler deals

If they’d aid him in his search

He took an oath before God

To never once set foot in the church

As long as his Eloise was missing

The King’s love for his only daughter

Withstood the test of time

For he always sought her

His oath he did keep

Being buried in his garden

Below an old oak tree

In the Kingdom of Marden

I love how you develop an intriguing backstory for the princess and her father and the dealings of the mortals with the Fae in not many verses at all. This was written beautifully, but with a real sadness to it. Poor king.

Last of the season, even though the season was only half gone - like that bit!

Lovely piece full of mystery, love, and loss. I'm not familiar with the Kingdom of Marden. Can you tell me more about it, whenever you have a moment?
