Things I Forgot: Part 1

can you remember that time

your mate showed you

pictures of your ex-girlfriend

in a dirty magazine

you mighta laughed it off

you mighta joked it off

you mighta choked it off

and you mighta asked him

if you could keep it

you know mate

nudge nudge wink wink

an all that

you mighta kept it hid

under your pillow for a bit

kept it hidden in a drawer

kept it away and kept it secret

but kept it close and safe

once sheeny gloss dimmens

dog eared and dishevelled

its former shine fading

as the pages kneel to time

so much pride and shame

so much lump in the throat

between those unkempt covers

i don't suppose he told you

of the sad and sorry smiles

and all the lonely miles

between that then and now

did he attempt to explain

that every time

he opens wide

that grotty little tome

that he put his hand

on the page

to cover her nakedness

and did he tell you

that he only looks into her eyes?
