Notes from the Author:
This poem reflects a personal relationship. It was inspired by a song by The Bravery called “The Ocean,” off the 2007 album, “The Sun and the Moon.” It’s one of my favourite songs of all time, taking me back to my last year of high school when I was 16. It’s worth mentioning this is a fantastic and seamless album all the way through.

Oysters
Oysters require some Pressure and patience to pop Surprise sediment ___________________________ I’ve been shucking oysters for a living at least five days a week for the past year and seven months. I’ve smelled the sulfuric stench off plenty of bad ones, experienced the variety of dense or spongey textures of the shell, shucked myself a few times that thankfully did not lead to infection, tasted the salt and freshness of the sea, and witnessed the wild beauty of the striations on both the outside and inside that make each oyster unique.

Touching the Sky
Back in 2020 (yes, THAT 2020), I took my very first steps towards becoming an international traveler. I was 25 years old, and up to this point, the furthest I'd ever traveled alone from my home state of New Jersey without my family was to West Virginia.
