Medical Specialties

There are many specialties in the medical field. In studying nursing or other areas in this field one is bound to study and work with many different professionals from nursing to laboratory to auxiliary positions. Here is a list of specialties and definitions to be set up as flashcards.

1. What is the specialty of an anesthesiologist? Administration of medications to cause loss of sensation or feeling during surgery.

2. What kind of physician covers diseases of the heart and blood vessels? A cardiologist

3. What is the specialty of a dermatologist? Covers the diseases of the skin.

4. What kind of physician cares for acute illness or injury? Emergency Physician

5. What is the specialty of an endocrinologist? They cover diseases of the endocrine system.

6. What kind of physician promotes wellness, treats illness, or injury in all age groups? Family physicians or practice

7. What is the specialty of the gastroenterologist? They cover diseases and disorders of the stomach and intestines.

8. What kind of physician cares for diseases of the elderly? Gerontologist

9. What is the specialty of a gynecologist? They cover the diseases of the female reproductive organs.

10. What kind of physician covers diseases of the internal organs (lungs, heart, glands, intestines, kidneys). The Internist

4. What is an ophthalmologist? A specialist that covers diseases and disorders of the eye.

5. What is an orthopedist? A specialist the diseases and disorders of the muscles and bones.

6. What is an otolaryngologist? A specialist that covers disease of the ear, nose and throat.

7. What is a pathologist? A specialist that covers and diagnoses disease by studying changes in organs, tissues and cells.

8. What is a pediatrician? A specialist that covers diseases and disorders of children.

9. What is a psychiatrist? A specialist that covers diseases and disorders of the mind.

10. What is a physiatrist? A specialist that covers physical medicine and rehabilitation.

1. What is a plastic surgeon? A specialist that covers corrective surgery to repair injured or malformed body parts.

2. What is a proctologist? A specialist that covers diseases of the lower part of large intestine.

3. What is a radiologist? A specialist that covers the use of x-rays and radiation to diagnose and treat disease.

4. What is sports medicine? A specialty that is about the prevention and treatment of injuries sustained in athletic events.

5. What is a surgeon? A specialty that performs surgery to correct deformities or treat injuries or disease.

6. What is a thoracic surgeon? A specialty who does perform surgery of the lungs, heart, and chest cavity.

7. What is an urologist? A specialty that covers the diseases of the kidney, bladder, and urinary system.

(At times I used the word 'specialty' or 'person' to describe these departments in a hospital. There could be additional questions to ask when reviewing these flashcards, for example 'What department does the person or specialty belong? psychiatrist- behavioral health/psychiatry)
