A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

The parks in cities are where people go to relax, stroll, picnic, and enjoy themselves. These are paintings that famous artists have created of some of the most beautiful parks in the world. I think a painting of a park makes it even more desirable than a photograph.

England

Hyde Park Danish-French Impressionist and neo-Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro

Painter Pissarro is known for his artworks of natural scenes and landscapes. Among his greatest masterpieces is the painting Hyde Park finished in 1890. He depicted Hyde Park in London painting the scene before him during the autumn season.

This work of art was created by French artist Georges Seurat during the latter end of the Impressionist movement. The artist was known for his distinct painting style including stippling or pointillism. This painting depicts French culture during the late 19th century particularly in and around Paris. He created it in 1886 and it became one of his most notable works focusing on the setting of a popular park. La Grande Jatte is located at the gates of Paris in the Seine River between Neuilly and Levallois-Perret. It was a popular place to spend a sunny afternoon.

Park Monceau, Paris French painter and co-founder of the Impressionist movement Claude Monet

The painting was created in the spring of 1876 and is one of three views depicted. The park is located on the Avenue de Courcelles in Paris. It was designed as an English garden for Philippe d’Orleans in the late eighteenth century. The artwork was completed in 1876 after the park opened to the public. The painting was presented at the 1877 Impressionist Exhibition.

In St Cloud Park French painter Pierre Auguste-Renoir

The beautiful park is located to the west of Paris. Renoir was a notable painter of the Impressionist movement and often depicted the French countryside. In 1866 the artist created an artwork depicting a sprawling nature reserve that would later become a city park. At the time Renoir painted this scene, the park was heavily forested.

Avenue in the Park Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh

The lovely scenery of this park was painted in a park in Arles, France, a coastal city in Southern France. The artist frequently visited the parks in and around Arles which was the site of his asylum where he spent his final two years. The painting was finished in 1888 depicting different green hues and yellow accents offering a prime example of van Gogh’s artistic mastery to produce the natural world.
