The 8-month kitten in my house turned into a T-Rex
A golden shovel
“We all have a dinosaur deep within us just trying to get out.”
- Colin Mochire
Our kitten’s ears fell off first. Then, we
weren’t sure what to make of it when all
his hair was replaced by scales. Have
you ever seen a cat turn into a
Dinosaur?
~
He upturned the water glass with deep
disdain. There is a roaring within
his body – it sounds like purring to us.
He knocks over my cereal bowl just
to hear the fossils clatter. He is trying
to find a novel species of prey to
pillage, or a new vertebrate to get
his teeth into. (But I am worn out.)

Author notes:
For those who may not know, a golden shovel is a poetic form created by Terrance Hayes where a poem borrows a line or quote from elsewhere and uses each word of that quote sequentially as the concluding word for each line of the poem. In this poem, I used the words of the quote, “We all have a dinosaur deep within us just trying to get out" to end each of the 13 lines of the poem. Read more about golden shovel poems here.
