Escaping Hades

A poem about living, dying, and the end. Or is it?

Do not cry for me, dear friends

For this is not a day for sorrow

My departure means that nothing ends

We will all be together at some distant tomorrow

Remember what I’ve done

For it was a true and good way to go

A life filled with love and fun

And yes, some suffering and pain as you may know

But all is not lost

For this is not the end of the line

Always know that life has a steep cost

Somehow, you’ll see things are just fine

Remember the times we spent with a smile

Not the story of how we got to today

Think fondly of me for a while

And consider some nice words you can say

Always, I’ve known, I would meet this grim fate

If I were there, no reason to cry about it now to you I’d say

This is the truth of mankind, we come with an expiration date

Death is the price that all men pay

Death is not an end, but a journey to be taken

One that I’ll tell you about someday

Life, it isn’t something to be forsaken

And time isn’t something to let get away

Learn this lesson friends and lovers

Take it with you and hold it to heart

Share it with friends, family, and others

Don’t forget this is our journey from the start

Take time to live this gift well

Protect and cherish each day and night

Before it is you who hears that ringing bell

Facing the reaper’s pure unsatisfied delight

Cry not for me, not one minute longer

Remember me how I was when at my best

I hope that I helped make your life stronger

Knowing I tried harder than the rest

Party on young lions and ladies

Drink one for me if you can

By now you’ll wonder if Heaven or Hades

Going downstairs was always in the plan

A legacy of no regrets I hope I did leave

Say nothing boring is connected to my name

Don’t take too long as you feel and grieve

Remember life was always a silly game

Most of all, remember my final goodbye wish

For I guarantee a better day will come

There’s some business I know I need to finish

When I get back, it’s going to freak out more than just some

It’ll take all of your prayers and all my might

But coming back is my next trick

And if I did indeed have to escape hell with one more fight

My final words to satan, as I crawled out of the pit, “suck my …..”

This is awesome. Sad, yet empowering and hopeful even in the face of death. Beautifully done.

  • In my book, it's only hell if you don't want to be there as the psalmist reassures us in 139 that God is present even there. That having been said, those parting words to Satan are prime choice for any who would be our Accuser (what both "satan" & "devil" literally mean).
