Sex and the City

Carrie is the worst part of Sex and the City, but Charlotte and the other girls are definitely who we all watch and rewatch the show for. So I am doing an article for each of the girls highlighting all the reasons that they are amazing. Charlotte is one of my favorites, she is elegant, smart and very sweet. She is also a little neurotic but in a super adorable way. She is the traditional friend who does a great job of balancing out Samantha.

In season 2 when the ladies are identifying their harmful patterns Charlotte realizes that hers is her expectations of marriage. She finds a perfect prospect and projects all of her future plans on him before the first date even happens, obviously causing the relationship to crash and burn when he can’t meet her fantasy expectations. What I love about Charlotte is that she wants so badly to have this perfect image, the perfect family, the perfect life. And the things that she wants (for the most part) are very traditional but she is still a smart, working, self sufficient woman with an adorable level of neurosis.

One of Charlotte’s not so good moments is when her brother comes to visit in the midst of his divorce and he ends up sleeping with Samantha. She basically slut shames Samantha causing her to leave angrily. I love Charlotte but the girl needs to check herself sometimes. I LOVE that Sam is comfy in her sexuality and she isn’t ashamed of herself. Like I said her and Charlotte kind of balance each other out but being that they are kind of opposites they are bound to clash sometimes. Charlotte apologizes after realizing that she was wrong. However she kind of continues to slut shame Samantha over the course of the series. In season 3 when Charlotte and Trey aren’t having sex she is obviously wound really tight and she takes it out on Sam who is getting laid. She tends to be really buttoned up and it's just being a good friend.

To counteract that, one of Charlotte’s absolute best moments is when she finds out about Carrie and Big and she loses it on Carrie. She calls her out for being selfish and inconsiderate and I love her for it. Carrie needed a reality check and Charlotte was always the one to put her in her place. It happens again when Carrie needs money (because she spent it all on shoes) and she tries to guilt Charlotte into donating to her charity case.

One of my personal favorite Charlotte moments is right before she marries Trey and she has to sign the pre-nup. She realizes that she is worth more than is being offered and she stands up for herself and demands that she be treated properly. I love her for that. Too often Charlotte is sweet and subdued so the moments where she stands up for herself and what she believes I just get so much more respect for her.

Charlotte is sweet and simple and sometimes that can bite her in the ass. But for the most part it just makes her a good friend (to most of the girls). Her and Samantha are pretty diametrically opposed but they still manage to create and maintain a lasting friendship. This shows her ability to compromise and keep an open mind even if it isn’t her knee-jerk reaction to do so. Sometimes the girls force her out of her comfort zone and though she resists, she goes along with it because she loves and trusts them. Charlotte is just great.
