Blue is Hiding

For as much as blue seems to be in plain sight in our lives, it sure does seem to be hiding a lot. What is the color blue hiding from us?

This story was originally published on Medium.

The sky looks blue but it’s not blue. It’s clear, they say.

The water looks blue but it’s not blue. It’s clear, they say.

I question these blueberries in my oatmeal.

Stop lying, you are clearberries.

Blue is not a color.

Blue is a facade.

Blue is hiding in plain sight, right behind clear.

Maybe blue is a color, just not in our atmosphere.

Hiding beyond the clear horizon.

Hiding beyond the surface of the water.

Blue is hiding.

Why won’t blue show itself?

And who made these brownies? They’re making me feel blurry.

You weren’t supposed to eat more than one of those brownies! How many did you have?”

“Your name is Avery! This isn’t a poetry slam! This is my daughter’s christening! Stop autographing all my relatives’ formal wear!”

Avery’s friend Tom regretted his own actions that day… almost as much as he regretted Avery’s actions. Then again, he pondered, maybe bringing pot brownies to his daughter’s christening wasn’t the best idea.

😂😂😂 this is hilarious. I can picture this actually happening in real life. The way you questioned the validity of the color blue’s existence was genius and very likely for somebody that has eaten an edible. Well-done. This deserves top story for sure.

  • This is a great read. I love it. You got me thinking about fake blue hiding behind things. Wow. I have blue eyes. Umm.

This went... so many unexpected places. I love your writing, Stephen. You always put a huge smile on my face - and more often than not, a poignant perspective in my mind. Delivered both in spades with this piece. Like Naomi, your clearberries killed me. And then the Asimovian moral at the end... Perfection.

OMG. I love everything about this. You already know I love the color blue, and edibles. But this was thought provoking and hilarious. It got real existential with blue hiding behind clear, then cracked me up with “clearberries.” 🫐 So good!

  • Is this a case of the pot calling the kettle blue as it hides itself behind the dishwasher? An absolute delight!
