About this challenge
They say it takes a village to raise a child. This village often consists of family members, educators, friends, peers, athletic coaches, and inspirational people we meet along the way. There have probably been countless moments in your life where you’ve leaned on someone you trust for advice or assistance. No matter who you’ve turned to, the importance of mentors is undeniable. So, this Challenge is dedicated to all the influential people who have made a positive impact in our lives. To all the mentors who have given us a helping hand, kept us inspired, and motivated us to conquer all our goals, we want to uplift and thank you.
Join the Hometown Heroes Challenge by composing an open letter addressed to the people who have shaped who you are. Whether your letter is a heart-to-heart to an educator, a token of appreciation to your mom, or a letter of reflection to someone who stepped in when you needed it the most, let them know how much they've impacted your life. We encourage you to include images, videos, and other keepsakes that are reflective of your journey with this special person.
We’ve partnered with Be A Mentor for this Challenge because they are committed to enabling youth to develop positive relationships with caring adults who empower them to reach their full potential through mentorship. We’d like to gently remind you that this is a safe space, and we can’t wait to read your stories.

Just a Minute Challenge Winners
Thanks again to Vocal Creator, Breezy, for suggesting the Just a Minute Challenge — one which you all interpreted in a wonderful variety of ways. Sometimes a minute can feel like an eternity, sometimes it can pass in the blink of an eye… to describe the passing of sixty seconds is no simple matter.

This is the third time Dane has won one of our challenges, and she appears too on our Vocal podcast, Write Here, Write Now — take a listen if you haven’t already. But she’s not our winner because we know her: the subtlety and simplicity of we watched the world go dark. together. is what made it our winner of the In Eclipse challenge, with the grace and ease of its lines and observation. As it happens it also expresses the community spirit that means so much to us.

Congratulations to Morgan Christy Rickards for their winning Whispering Woods story, Guardian at the Gate. Morgan has been a Vocal creator since February 2021, and this is their first time placing in Challenge — well done, starting with a win! Guardian at the Gate draws evocatively from Welsh tales of the Cantre'r Gwaelod, a lost sunken kingdom between the forest and the sea. Heledd’s dangerous adventure pulls her towards the water but her spirit is anchored in the woods: Morgan’s writing is atmospheric and exciting.
